Thaw selected as new dean for School of Health Professions at Dalton State

Dalton, GA (06/17/2025) — Kurt Thaw has been selected as the new dean for Dalton State College's School of Health Professions, effective July 1. Thaw will come to Dalton State with more than 27 years of experience at Millsaps College, where he has served as a faculty member and held progressive leadership roles.

"Dr. Thaw brings strong experience in creating new programs and majors and leading efforts to develop a distinctive student experience, and he will be a valuable contributor to our work at Dalton State and our Vision 2050 strategic initiatives," President John Fuchko, III, said.

Thaw was selected following a comprehensive national search and will serve as professor of health and wellness, in addition to his role as an academic dean.

"The strength of our candidate pool was a testament to the school's growing reputation and potential," said Gina Kertulis-Tartar, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Dr. Thaw brings a wealth of knowledge, dedication, and vision to Dalton State, and we are confident that his leadership will further elevate the School of Health Professions and be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow and innovate."

Dalton State's student-centered approach and experiential learning opportunities particularly resonated with Thaw.

"The variety of health pathways offered provides students with multiple avenues to find their calling in healthcare, while serving student interests and community needs," he said.

'This hands-on approach is essential for developing healthcare professionals who are both knowledgeable and skilled practitioners."

Expanding community partnerships and workforce development opportunities will be one of Thaw's top priorities.

"I am committed to strengthening existing partnerships and forging new connections that will enhance learning opportunities for our students while simultaneously improving health outcomes in our community, region and state," he said.

Thaw currently serves as associate dean of sciences and professor of psychology and neuroscience at Millsaps College. His research explores the factors regulating hunger and satiety. He earned his doctorate in neuroscience from Florida State University and conducted post-doctoral work at the University of Virginia and Cornell University. He earned a master's degree in psycho-biology from Florida State University and his bachelor's degree in experimental psychology from Georgia Southern University.

"We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Marina Smitherman for her outstanding leadership over the past year. Her commitment and strategic guidance have positioned the School of Health Professions for continued growth and success," Kertulis-Tartar said.

Smitherman has served as the school's interim dean since July 2024. She will resume her roles as biology professor and chair of the Department of Life Science.
