Dalton State College welcomed more than 6,000 students on opening day

Dalton, GA (08/17/2026) — A record number of students began the Fall 2026 semester at Dalton State College on August 10, with more than 6,000 students attending classes on opening day and setting the stage for another year of growth.

While enrollment will continue to fluctuate during the add/drop period and official counts will be reported later this fall, college leaders say the opening-day figures reflect Dalton State's growing appeal to students seeking a high-quality, affordable education with strong career outcomes.

"One of the most exciting times of the year at Dalton State is welcoming students back to campus and seeing the energy they bring with them," Dalton State President John Fuchko said. "From orientation and First Chime to move-in day and the first day of classes, we've seen students engaging with the campus community and embracing new opportunities. The continued growth in enrollment and participation reflects the confidence students and families have in Dalton State and the transformative educational experience we provide."

Dalton State's official welcome-back festivities began August 8 with move-in day at Mashburn Hall, where faculty, staff and student volunteers helped residential students and their families settle into campus life. Mashburn Hall reached maximum capacity for the second consecutive year.

The college hosted its third annual First Chime, Dalton State's official freshman convocation, with 1,379 new Roadrunners in attendance on August 9. Festivities included a celebration on the Dalton State Quad, featuring musical performances and the ceremonial first ringing of the bell tower for the incoming class and a fireworks display.

Increased student engagement began well before the start of classes through Dalton State's summer orientation program, which recorded its second consecutive year of record-breaking attendance.

"Ensuring our students feel welcome begins before orientation and continues well beyond our series of hallmark welcome events," Jami Hall, vice president for student success and enrollment, said. "From the enrollment process to quality academics to engaging experiences, our college has a team of dedicated faculty and staff who support our students every step of the way."

Dalton State ranks among the top 10% most affordable public four-year colleges in the nation, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Education's College Affordability and Transparency Center, and has been among the top 10% in the nation for student engagement for three consecutive years, according to the Wall Street Journal.
